I participated in some of the toughest essay competitions in the world. I got first positions and finalist positions in a couple of very reputed All India competitions, and in others though I got no award, the effort was not a wasted one. The challenge of writing on tough topics in some way connected to the subjects I study, helped me to understand the nuances that exist beyond the text books.
